Travellers who passed through Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) on July 7 are being advised to monitor for symptoms after Peel Public Health confirmed a measles case linked to two flights and the airport.
According to reports, health officials say potential exposures occurred on Biman Bangladesh Airlines Flight BG305 from Bangladesh to Toronto via Rome, Air Canada Flight AC1986 from Toronto to Moncton, and in Terminals 3 and 1 at Toronto Pearson International Airport between 1:11 p.m. and 11:45 p.m. on July 7.
Anyone who may have been exposed is urged to monitor for symptoms until July 28.
"Although the overall risk of measles is low in Peel, it can spread quickly, especially among people who are not yet fully protected," Dr. Atiba Nelson, Associate Medical Officer of Health for Peel Region told CityNews.
Health officials advise anyone who develops symptoms to self-isolate and contact a healthcare provider before visiting a clinic or hospital so appropriate infection prevention measures can be put in place. If an in-person visit is necessary, individuals should wear a well-fitting respirator, such as an N95 mask.
Symptoms can appear as early as seven days after exposure and include high fever, cough, runny nose, red or watery eyes and a red rash that typically begins on the face before spreading downward.
According to Infection Prevention and Control Canada, more than 1,000 cases have been reported nationally this year, with travel-related infections contributing to local transmission in under-vaccinated communities.
The Peel case marks the region's second confirmed measles case of 2026. According to Public Health Ontario, 27 measles cases had been reported across Ontario as of June 23.
