Many Canadian news outlets – including TravelPulse Canada and other trade media -- may soon disappear from Google search results and other big tech platforms operated by Meta, owners of Facebook and Instagram.

Google says it will remove links to Canadian news stories from search results in this country after failing to receive assurances it wanted from Ottawa about the Online News Act, or Bill C-18.

Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, has vowed to follow suit.

Signed into law last week, Bill C-18 was designed to support the Canadian news industry, which has seen a portion of its digital advertising dollars migrate to the tech platforms. The bill would force Facebook and Google to negotiate deals to compensate news outlets in Canada for posting or linking to their work.

Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, has also said it will block the posting and sharing of Canadian news stories on both platforms in this country in response to the legislation, which will come into force in about six months.

“I think the travel industry is collateral damage in this battle,” says John Kirk, founder and president of TravelPulse Canada.

“We don’t need or desire money from Google or Meta – in fact we greatly appreciate the traffic generated through Google search and Facebook links. Travel consultants often end up dropping Travel Pulse as a search in Google to arrive on the site. But unless a resolution is found, search results and links to our stories and those of our competitors could soon disappear.”

Kirk says the best way to ensure you’re not missing essential daily travel industry information is to subscribe to the free TravelPulse Canada Daily Newsletter. Recently redesigned as well as the TravelPulse.ca website, the  newsletter gives you the top travel industry stories of the day at a glance, as well as links to video interviews, sponsored content and more.

“It’s never been more important to stay abreast of this fast-changing industry,” says Kirk. “Once you’ve subscribed to the newsletter we’ll send you daily updates early each morning and Breaking News alerts when – and only when – there are developments that could impact your business and your clients.”
