The Bonjouir Teahupoo Lodge Paradise is located on the island of Tahiti's southern section, a super-chill area called Tahiti Iti. The road stops before you can reach the lodge, so guests are picked up in boat and transported to this little slice of Eden, with an amazing garden, nature hikes, a cool swimming pond and wonderful owners.

Rooms at Bonjouir Teahupoo Lodge Paradise are modest but quite reasonably priced, with many units under $200 CAD. There's not much of a beach, but the lagoon is right there and the mountains are truly spectacular. There's even a bathtub perched on the pier. Truly one of the most beautiful places you'll ever see, and an easy drive (and a short boat ride) from the Tahitian capital of Papeete.

Vanira Lodge features a set of small, beautiful cottages or huts scattered on a pretty hillside on the Tahiti Iti portion of Tahiti island. It's easy to reach by car and there's a good, full-service restaurant with fabulous views. The lodge is perhaps 90 minutes drive from Papeete.

Vanira Lodge is a quiet place to escape. Our room had its own private hot tub and an outdoor shower, along with a hammock. They have two small swimming pools, a grass court for volleyball or other net sports, and a large yoga pavilion. The sunsets are brilliant.

Manava Suite Resort has a beautiful infinity pool overlooking Tahiti's lagoon. Rooms are spacious and bright, and there's a nice, on-site restaurant. Sunsets and geat views of Moorea only add to the allure.

The Manava Suite Resort has a fine (and enormous) infinity pool and a swim-up bar. It's a great place for young folks but I also spotted a number of families. Our room had a nice kitchenette, a good-sized patio and separate shower and bath.

I flew Air Tahiti Nui from Los Angeles to Papeete. It's a little less than eight hours, so not bad. I flew on their Boeing Dreamliner, which is a beautiful plane with added moisture in the air and mood lighting to help you sleep. We had great service and tons of space in their Premium Economy class, including seats with a very nice and comfortable recline and plenty of on-board entertainment.

Fare Vai Nui hotel and restaurant has five private bungalows steps from a beautiful lagoon. Our suite had a large porch and a sun spot with deck chairs, as well as beautiful, gleaming wood and a large bathroom. Some rooms have an extra bed, which is great for a small family.

Fare Vai Nui is a wonderful, family-run spot on the quiet, peaceful west side of Raiatea. You can borrow a bike and ride and explore for free. The on-site restaurant is terrific, with a chef who trained and worked in Paris. There's a nice pool overlooking the lagoon, and the fish is super-fresh. A reasonable and lovely spot to stay.

The Four Seasons Bora Bora resort is one of the most beautiful hotels in the world, with fabulous, spacious overwater bungalows and fabulous views of the Bora Bora lagoon and craggy, picturesque Mt. Otemanu. You can swim in the regular lagoon, but the hotel also has its own extension with colourful fish and, they say, even an octopus.

The swimming pool at the Four Seasons Bora Bora is a smashing design with great lagoon and mountain views. There's a nice bar and lunch spot right alongside, and you can also get a cabana for the day to stay out of the hot sun. The food and drinks are excellent at the resort, and there's also a fire and Tahitian dance show on Friday nights.

The Four Seasons Bora Bora is a great spot for a wedding. You can even have the ceremony performed, as this couple did, on a small island in what might be the world's most famous lagoon. How romantic is that?

The Four Seasons Bora Bora offers up a tremendous spa, with recovery areas that overlook either the ocean or the lagoon. This is the couples massage recovery room, where you can relax in a warm tub after a great treatment and nibble on fresh tropical fruit.
