Mazatlán Travel Guide

Mazatlán is known for its long stretch of beach and resort atmosphere. Although it’s often overlooked as a premier travel destination, those that do visit find themselves quickly falling in love with the unique vibes and deep history.

If you’re ready to give your heart to Mazatlán and make the most of your trip, use this Mazatlán travel guide to learn more about this one-of-a-kind city.

Getting around Mazatlán is fairly easy because there is a wide variety of transportation options.

  • On Foot: Of course, the easiest and most cost-effective travel method in the city is on foot. While you won’t be able to walk to all tourist destinations, it’s a great way to do the bulk of your city traveling.
  • By Taxi: Mazatlán’s eco-taxis are affordable and easy to use. The taxis have set fares and will take you to most of the tourist destinations.
  • By Bus: Similar to taxis, the Mazatlán buses are also affordable and easy to navigate through the city.
  • By Pulmonia: We recommend Pulmonia for all Mazatlán visitors. It’s the same cost as a taxi but a much more unique experience. The vehicles are open-air and are an awesome way to get a feel for the city while traveling between destinations.

Important Things To Know

Currency

Mazatlán, as a Mexican city, uses the Mexican Peso as currency. The symbol for the peso is Mex$ and $.

The currency is available in banknotes and coins: $20, $50, $100, $200, $500, and $1000 banknotes; 10c, 20c, 50c, $1, $2, $5, $10, and $20 coins.

We recommend bringing a mix of pesos and dollars. Most of the stores and attractions in tourist regions accept USD as payment alongside the peso.

National Languages

Most Mazatlán locals speak Spanish and other native languages.

While there, we noticed that almost all the tourist areas had English-speaking individuals so communicating wasn’t an issue. You’re more than welcome to download a translation app but you’ll likely only need it on the outskirts of the city.

Climate And Weather

Mazatlán has a hot and cloudy wet season. This falls during the summer months, from June to August. In summer, late afternoon showers are common.

The rest of the year sees clearer skies and less rain. The weather is also very pleasant during this time. Even in the winter months (December, January, and February), the cold is only ever a problem late at night. The days are pleasant and bright.

When To Visit Mazatlán

Mazatlán is a year-round travel destination. The only weather we’d actively avoid is the peak summer season when the rain sometimes puts a stop to outdoor activities. Other than that, most attractions are open throughout the year.

The only other thing to consider is expenses. Winter is the peak travel season and the cost of accommodation tends to skyrocket. We’ve found that late September to November, right before peak season, is the best time to travel for both expenses and weather.

  • Our favorite spot for chilled exploration was Plaza Machado. This beautiful town square is brimming with cafes, palm trees, and picture-perfect spots.
