Iceland Travel Guide

Due to its surreal landscapes and being relatively untouched, Iceland is one of the most unique destinations for travel today.

The big pull for many tourists is the chance to see the magical Northern Lights, but there are other breathtaking natural attractions to enjoy during a trip to the Nordic island.

Iceland does not have as many transport options as other major countries, but you can still get around to where you need to go.

If you are confident to drive abroad, we recommend hiring a car to travel between places. The one major highway in Iceland is called Route 1, and this takes you anywhere in the country. Plus, it is well located to major attractions.

If you would prefer not to drive, there are shuttle options to take you around. In Reykjavik itself, the main public transport option is the bus system, which is easy to use.

If it is the Northern Lights you are after, it is best to visit during the colder months (between September and March).

It is worth enquiring with a local tour operator about the exact times during this period that gives you the best chance to view the lights, as it might differ yearly.

Best Places To Stay In Iceland

  • Reykjavik: The capital is the most-visited city in Iceland, as it is central for airport arrivals, and has a big bulk of the must-see attractions in it or close by.

There are generally also more accommodation options, as well as readily available public buses to get around. We suggest you start your trip here if you are planning to see more of Iceland.

  • Akureyri: The fifth biggest municipality in Iceland, Akureyri is a port city that is picturesque and prides itself on its cultural heritage.

It is home to the Akureyri Botanical Garden which is perfect for hiking and walks, and it has many museums that you can visit. We spent some time there whale watching, as it has some great spots for this.

  • Höfn: is a tiny town in the southern part of Iceland with a harbor that is ideal for fishing.
With a minuscule population of just about 2,462, it is perfect if you want to experience a small, serene area that is relatively untouched. Here, you can see the largest glacier in Europe, and it has beautiful beaches.
