After a year marked by economic pressures and geopolitical uncertainty, Canadians are once again gearing up to travel this winter, according to Allianz Global Assistance Canada’s latest Winter Vacation Confidence Study.
The annual survey found that 46% of Canadians are confident they will take a winter vacation this year — an 11-point jump over last winter.
“We're seeing a clear resurgence in Canadians' desire to travel, especially among younger generations,” said Dan Keon, VP of Marketing & Insights at Allianz Global Assistance Canada.
Millennials show the strongest intention to travel, with 52% planning a winter getaway. They are followed by Gen Z at 48% and Gen X at 46%.
Boomers, while still the most hesitant group at 37% confident, show a notable comeback, up 11 points from last year.
Families are also driving the rebound: 56% of households with children plan to travel this winter, compared to 42% of those without kids.
Holiday travel is seeing a particularly sharp return.
Nearly one-third of Canadians (32%) say they intend to travel outside their home province in late December, almost double last year’s level.
Families again lead the way, with 46% of households with children planning holiday trips compared to 27% of those without.
When choosing destinations, Canadians are almost evenly divided between warm-weather vacations and local travel. Mexico and the Caribbean top the list at 30%, followed closely by domestic travel at 29%.
The U.S. and Europe each account for 14%, while 13% plan to visit other international destinations.
Boomers are shifting their travel preferences more dramatically than other groups. Only 8% plan to visit the U.S. — a 19-point drop from last year — while 39% intend to travel within Canada. Another 28% are favouring Mexico and the Caribbean, up nine points.
The findings are based on an Ipsos survey of 2,001 Canadian adults conducted Oct. 20–22, 2025, examining year-over-year shifts in travel intentions, barriers, and the role of travel insurance in Canadians’ plans.
