Four years might sound like a long lead time for a European vacation, but for an event staged only once a decade, travellers are already being encouraged to plan ahead.
Kensington has opened reservations for the 2030 Oberammergau Passion Play, with performances scheduled to run from May through October 2030 in the Bavarian village of Oberammergau.
The historic production, which dates back nearly 400 years, is held once every 10 years and involves more than 2,000 local cast and crew members. Approximately half a million visitors are expected to attend during the 2030 season.
"The Oberammergau Passion Play is one of those rare experiences where the occasion itself can inspire an entire journey," said Helen Giontsis, President of Kensington.
"Because it takes place only once every ten years, travelers have an opportunity to think beyond simply attending the performance and create something truly personal around it whether that's exploring Bavaria and Austria with a private guide, spending time in Salzburg, or pairing the experience with a luxury river cruise along the Danube. Starting early gives us the greatest flexibility to design the journey entirely around the traveler."
Rather than offering only fixed group departures tied to specific dates and itineraries, Kensington is allowing travellers to incorporate the Passion Play into customized European trips, with options to add private guides, accommodations, transportation and other destinations before or after the performance.
The company has introduced several itineraries built around the 2030 production.
Its Danube River Journey combines the Passion Play with a river cruise through Central Europe, while the Rhine River Cruise: Passion Play pairs a private land itinerary with a seven-night Rhine cruise from France to Bavaria.
The latter begins in Paris and includes Mont Saint-Michel, Rouen, Strasbourg and Cologne before continuing to Bavaria for the performance.
A land-based Bavaria to Salzburg itinerary is also available, combining Oberammergau with a privately guided trip through Bavaria and into Austria.
A Tradition Dating Back to 1634
The Oberammergau Passion Play was first performed in 1634 and depicts the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The production remains closely tied to the local community, with Oberammergau residents participating as actors, musicians, singers and members of the production team.
The tradition began after villagers made a vow during a deadly outbreak of plague in the 17th century to perform a play depicting the life and death of Christ if they were spared further deaths. The Passion Play has since continued for nearly four centuries, generally taking place once every decade.
With the next season limited to May through October 2030, Kensington says travellers looking for particular performance dates, accommodations or more extensive European itineraries should consider planning well in advance.
