Global Affairs has updated its travel advice for Canadians travelling in Ecuador due to potential danger caused by extreme weather. Heavy rains in parts of the South American country have led to landslides, flooding and “significant damage” to roadways and infrastructure. A nationwide state of emergency has been declared. Regional states of emergency have also been declared in the following provinces:

  • Chimborazo
  • El Oro
  • Esmeraldas
  • Guayas
  • Loja
  • Los Ríos
  • Manabí
  • Santa Elena

The Canadian government is advising anyone in the affected areas:

  • Monitor local media and government websites for the latest updates, including those on road conditions and closures.
  • Identify safe locations to shelter in during heavy rains.
  • Stay away from areas that are flooded, under red alert or prone to landslides.
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities, including evacuation orders.

The travel advisory level for Ecuador remains at yellow/exercise a high degree of caution, with elevated regional advisories along the Peru and Columbia borders and in the northwest. As always, travellers are advised to register as a Canadian abroad when visiting overseas.
