For the ninth straight month the number of people coming into Canada (both Canadians and visitors) dropped when compared to last year, reports Statistics Canada.

In October, the trend that has been set since the beginning of the year continued. The drop in traveller numbers is mainly attributed to fewer Canadians visiting the U.S.

Canadians returning by air from the States fell by 23.9% compared with October, 2024. The decline is even steeper for travel by car: 30.5% fewer than last year.

Reciprocatively, fewer Americans are also visiting Canada by automobile, but the decline is much less dramatic: less than 1 percent for visits by automobile (0.7%). American residents coming to Canada by air rose slightly, by 1.3% when compared to last year’s numbers.

Canadians coming home from overseas did so in greater numbers, up 6.8%. There was also a rise in non-U.S. international visitors arriving here, 7.1% more than last year.

Even though overseas travel was up, the continued reluctance of Canadians to travel to the U.S. means the overall number of Canadians returning home from across the border was down 5.2%.
