Travellers at Vancouver International Airport (YVR) are being warned to expect delays as staffing constraints at Nav Canada continue to impact air traffic control services—just as the airport prepares for a surge of passengers over the long weekend.
According to CTV News, dozens of flights were affected Thursday evening, with 75 arrivals between 3 p.m. and midnight delayed, along with approximately two dozen departing flights.
Nav Canada confirmed the delays on social media, posting:
“Delays affecting some flights in YVR due to NAV CANADA resource constraints. Our team is moving aircraft safely and as quickly as possible. Passengers: check the status of your flight with your airline.”

The timing is especially challenging as the airport prepares for more than 350,000 travellers over the long weekend, with Friday, August 1, expected to be the busiest day. YVR anticipates 91,780 passengers that day, followed closely by 91,613 on Monday, August 4.
The airport says this year’s holiday traffic is 3.8 per cent higher than the record-breaking travel volumes of 2019.
Similar issues at NAV Canada disrupted operations over the Canada Day weekend, when more than 200 flights were delayed and dozens cancelled—an episode an airport spokesperson described as “incredibly frustrating,” according to CTV News.
Travellers are advised to continue monitoring their airline’s website or app for the latest updates.
