An airport in the Middle East was hit in an Iranian missile and drone attack on Wednesday, June 3, after the country retaliates against recent U.S. strikes even as deal talks to end the war continue, leading to loss of life and injury.
CBS News and Reuters are both reporting that Kuwait International Airport was hit during the attack, killing one person and wounding 63 others.
According to Reuters, one Indian national was killed during the attacks, others among the injured.
FlightAware is reporting that flights have been impacted, with numerous cancellations and delays to and from the airport.
Reuters obtained video footage of the airport’s damage from Kuwait’s news agency, showing massive holes in the roof of a terminal, with bricks and rubble everywhere as first responders comb through the wreckage.
The move comes after the U.S. carried out “self-defense strikes” on the Iranian military. Iran claims that the U.S. attacks violated the agreed-upon ceasefire, with Iranian foreign minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi saying, “What sanctions and war failed to achieve won’t be won with more war," but that any attacks on Iran would be met with retaliation.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio continues to claim a victory for the United States, saying the war is over, but there’s been no agreement over the U.S.’s demands for Iran to turn over its enriched uranium, curbs its nuclear plans and reopens the Strait of Hormuz, which was open prior to the U.S.-Israel attacks that started the war earlier this year.
Today’s Iranian strikes also hit Bahrain, with oil prices jumping over 2% just today as the war continues over three months.
A United Nations spokesperson told reporters that "The Secretary-General calls on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and to avoid any further escalation that risks to undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts.”
