Canadians were a travelling bunch last month, with 5.5 million of us returning home from an international trip during the month of June. That’s a slight increase of 3.6 percent over the same time last year. Data from Statistics Canada for the month of June reveals a gentle increase in the number of Canadians returning home from visits stateside, a trend that has continued over the last three months.

“Elbows Up”. is still impacting cross-border traffic, however. While Canadians returning from the U.S. are up 3.2 percent compared with June 2025, the number is still down significantly when compared with pre-boycott June 2024; a decrease of 28.7 percent between the two years.

Canadians travelled overseas slightly less in June 2026 than they did in 2025, falling to 873,200 return visits from countries other than the U.S., a drop of 0.4 percent.

The World Cup Effect

Foreign visitors continue to come to our country, with numbers likely influenced somewhat by an influx of World Cup fans. U.S. visits increased by 5.1 percent in June. Overseas visits were also up 5.1 percent. Total air arrivals from the 15 countries that played soccer matches in Toronto and Vancouver were up 32.5 percent (29,500 visitors) in June 2026 compared with June 2025. Statistics Canada made a note that air arrivals by Australian residents peaked on Friday, June 12, ahead of their World Cup match in Vancouver, while air arrivals by residents of Panama peaked on Tuesday, June 16, the day before their match in Toronto. Air arrivals by German residents peaked on Friday, June 19, before their World Cup match in Toronto on June 20.
