A British Columbia travel agency has had its licence cancelled by provincial regulators, leaving many customers scrambling for refunds.

CTV News spoke with several travellers who say they paid thousands for trips that may never materialize as the fallout continues.

According to reports, Vegas Vacations Ltd., a travel agency based in Richmond’s Lansdowne Centre, had its licence revoked on Jan. 9 by Consumer Protection BC.

Frustrated Customers Speak Out

“It was a scam,” one customer told CTV News, reflecting the frustration of dozens who say they paid for flights, hotels, and vacation packages that now might not be honoured.

Many say they paid in full, only to later discover that their bookings had not been secured. Some were told their vendors were unreachable, while others heard nothing at all after initial payments were made.

Consumer Protection BC determined that Vegas Vacations Ltd. failed to meet regulatory requirements, including submitting required financial information. As a result, its licence was suspended in late December before being permanently cancelled earlier this month.

By law, travel agents and wholesalers operating in British Columbia must hold a valid licence from Consumer Protection BC, provide annual financial reporting, and contribute to the Travel Assurance Fund, a consumer protection mechanism that covers losses from undelivered travel services. Failure to comply with these requirements can result in licence suspensions or cancellations.

Recourse for Affected Travellers

  • Credit Card Chargebacks: Many people who used credit cards have filed disputes with their card issuers in hopes of reversing payments for services not provided.
  • Travel Assurance Fund: Claims must be supported with documentation and are subject to eligibility criteria.
  • Contact Suppliers Directly: Experts also recommend travellers confirm reservations directly with airlines, hotels, or tour operators to determine if bookings are secure or if alternate arrangements can be made.
