The Government of Canada is urging Canadians to avoid non-essential travel to Bermuda due to Hurricane Imelda.

“Bermuda – AVOID NON-ESSENTIAL TRAVEL. Avoid non-essential travel to Bermuda due to Hurricane Imelda,” the advisory states, updated October 1 at 8:43 a.m. ET.

“We are tracking Tropical Storm #Imelda, which is expected to make landfall in #Bermuda. Check our travel advice often in case of updates as the storm moves,” a social media post said.

Hurricane Imelda continues to intensify as it moves toward Bermuda, with the 8 a.m. advisory reporting maximum sustained winds of 90 mph (145 km/h). Forecasters expect the storm to strengthen further, possibly reaching 100 mph before landfall.

Bermuda appears to be in the path of a direct hit. Residents have been warned to prepare for rapidly deteriorating conditions beginning today, including strong winds, heavy rainfall, and the likelihood of widespread power outages.

Authorities are urging the public to follow official updates and stay indoors as conditions worsen.

The Government of Canada has updated its travel advisory, warning that “Hurricane Imelda is expected to sweep across Bermuda on or around October 1, 2025. The storm is likely to bring excessive rainfall and violent winds. It may cause flash flooding and landslides and could severely disrupt the following essential services: transportation, power distribution, water and food supply, telecommunications networks, emergency services, [and] medical care.”

Canadians in Bermuda are urged to exercise caution, monitor local news and weather reports, and follow the instructions of local authorities.

The advisory also notes that hurricanes can significantly affect travel during the season, which runs from mid-May through the end of November. Even smaller tropical storms can rapidly develop into major hurricanes, posing significant safety risks and threatening essential services.

Travellers are advised to stay informed of regional forecasts, remain flexible with travel plans, and keep emergency contact information for their airline or tour operator.
