For the third straight month, the number of arrivals in Canada (both visitors and returning Canadians) has declined, compared with last year, reports Statistics Canada.

By air and over land, 4.5 million people entered Canada, which is 15.2 percent fewer than in April 2024.

When the data is broken down according to who is coming from where, the numbers show that the trend of international travel at the expense of U.S. travel seen over the past few months is continuing.

In April 2025, we welcomed 343,400 overseas residents (2.8 percent more than in 2024) and 289,300 U.S. residents, which was 5.5 percent fewer than in April of 2024.

Canadian residents returning from abroad by air fell slightly, by 1.7 percent compared to April 2024. The increase (by 9.9 percent) of Canadians returning from overseas was tempered by the steep 19.9 percent decline in Canadians returning by air from the United States.

Travel by car showed an even more dramatic decrease: 35.2 percent fewer Canadians travelled back from the U.S. last month than they did last year.

Transborder traffic by U.S. residents followed the pattern of decline as well. By air, 5.5 fewer Americans travelled here than in April 2024, and arrivals by automobile decreased 10.7 percent.
