Senior editor Jen Mallia won a Nathan Fong Memorial Award Honourable Mention for her story, Part of the Neighbourhood: Keefer House Hotel, Vancouver. The award was launched in memory of Vancouver chef and media personality, Nathan Fong who died suddenly in 2020. The award celebrates compelling stories that highlight the contributions of Canadians of Asian descent to Canadian culture.
“I had the pleasure of travelling with Nathan in Nova Scotia and crossing paths with him several times in the intervening years — he always seemed to have an insightful comment or witty quip…we had a lot of laughs!” says Mallia. “I hope he would have gotten a kick out of my story.”
The judges called Mallia’s story “an intimate invitation into Chinatown,” saying “this piece highlights the power of storytelling and local knowledge to transform how we experience place, guided by those deeply rooted in the community.”
