Nav Canada Gives Santa the All-Clear for Christmas Eve Flight

After navigating a few unexpected hiccups at the North Pole, Nav Canada has confirmed that final preparations are complete for Santa’s annual December 24 flight.

According to the Canadian air navigation service, operations briefly stalled when flight service specialists flagged an unusual flight plan filing from the North Pole. 

The submission included stray prompts that North Pole officials later described as a “sleigh-route simulation gone wrong,” such as: “Should I turn your flight plan into a holiday poem?” and “Would you like me to add cookies and milk stops to your itinerary?”

According to a press release, further review revealed that the AI-assisted filing had scheduled mandatory fuel stops in several Canadian cities, an unnecessary precaution given that Santa’s sleigh obviously runs on Christmas magic…and carrots.

“It seems that my elves would also benefit from making a list and checking it – and my flight plans – twice, but NAV Canada caught the issue and saved the night. The team of professionals have all made it onto the Nice List this year (except Lester-he knows why).”


Despite the festive filing mishap, Nav Canada says its team was more than ready to support the world’s most important overnight operation.

“Our air traffic services team manages millions of flights a year, but this is a day we circle on the calendar,” said Mark Cooper, President and CEO at Nav Canada. 

“We’re proud to provide the navigation support that ensures this special operation is safe and efficient--whether the aircraft is a Dreamliner or a sleigh travelling slightly faster than the laws of physics typically permit.”

With preparations complete, Santa confirmed he’s been cleared for a smooth journey.

“Canadian children have been exceptionally good this year,” Santa confirmed. “Nav Canada keeps the skies safe so I can focus on deliveries while avoiding that 12-foot inflatable snowman directly under an arrival procedure.”

As for the elves behind the AI filing? 

At press time, they’ve been enrolled in a mandatory refresher course titled “NOTAMs: They Are Not Suggestions.” Hot cocoa, Nav Canada confirmed, will be provided.
