Brazil may be readying for its renowned Carnival celebrations, but the Canadian government is advising travellers to take caution.

On the Travel Advisory site, the government has indicated an elevated level of caution is advised throughout the country, due to “high crime rates and regular incidents of gang-related and other violence in urban areas.” Non-essential travel to specific regions should be avoided completely. The advisory states “Criminal activity related to narcotics trafficking and arms smuggling poses a threat to your personal security” along the border. The affected regions are:

  • within 20 km of the border with Argentina, excluding Iguaçu National Park
  • within 20 km of the border with Colombia
  • within 20 km of the border with French Guiana
  • within 20 km of the border with Guyana
  • within 20 km of the border with Paraguay
  • within 20 km of the border with Peru
  • within 20 km of the border with Suriname
  • within 50 km of the border with Venezuela
  • within 20 km of the border with Bolivia, excluding Pantanal National Park

A special advisory for the city of Porto Velho, Rondônia used strong language to warn travellers about potential trouble. It states there have been clashes between military police and an organized criminal faction in parts of Porto Velho since January, 2025. As a result of the clashes, there have been “multiple deaths, significant property damage, and disruption of public transportation” with buses and vehicles set on fire.

The government instructs people in Porto Velho:

  • do not use public transportation.
  • expect a heightened police and military presence, obey the instructions of local authorities.
  • maintain a low profile.
  • be prepared for emergencies.
