Survey: Almost 90% of Ontarians Plan to Take 'Homegrown' Trips

With warmer weather on the horizon and a renewed appreciation for domestic travel, will Ontario's bustling cities and charming small towns see a surge in visitors?

The tourism industry is ready. 

A new survey by Context Research Group (CRG) on behalf of Destination Ontario indicates that nearly 90% of Ontario residents are likely to take an overnight pleasure trip within the province this year. 

"With uncertainty south of the border, now more than ever Ontarians are opting for homegrown tourism offerings that celebrate our collective identity, embrace our shared history, and support our local economy," Ontario’s Minister of Tourism, Culture and Gaming, Stan Cho, stated in a press release. 

With the theme Canada: Powered by Tourism, National Tourism Week (April 7-11, 2025) highlights the tourism sector's significant economic and cultural contributions. 

In Canada, tourism supports 1 in 10 jobs and generates over $100 billion in visitor spending annually. 

The Appeal of Ontario Travel

The Niagara Region, Toronto, Ottawa, and Muskoka are among the top destinations for short trips.

Findings from the survey include:

  • Nearly 60% of Ontarians prioritize local cuisine, shopping, and nature experiences.
  • Farmers' markets and lakeside dining are among the top food experiences, particularly in the Niagara Region, Toronto, and Prince Edward County.


"Tourism is a driving force behind Ontario's economy and identity, connecting communities and creating unforgettable experiences for travellers. As we celebrate National Tourism Week, these insights show just how passionate Ontarians are about exploring their own backyard," said Vincenza Ronaldi, President and CEO of Destination Ontario.

Now in its 15th year, National Tourism Week encourages Canadians to support local businesses and discover new destinations within their own provinces.
