As WestJet climbs out of the long weekend chaos caused by the flight attendants strike this past weekend, details are emerging about the tentative contract agreement that brought the job action to a quick end.

The Canadian Press is reporting the new contract includes a more than 18 per cent wage hike over three years, as well as a new “duty period premium” that adds compensation for work done on the ground, as well as increased allowances for uniforms and food, and increased time off for cabin crew.

When the deal was reached, CUPE 8125 President Alia Hussain said the tentative agreement represented meaningful progress. “It evolves the flight credit system by recognizing more of the work cabin crew are required to perform and with general increases to compensation for that work. Most importantly, this agreement was achieved through collective bargaining at the negotiating table.”

Details were shared with the 4,400 union members who fall under the collective agreement. They will now vote on ratifying the deal over the coming days.

The airline is working through the backlog of passengers whose travel plans were disrupted by the labour action, with operations expected to resume as normal today.
