Canadian Airlines Tops in North American OTP

Aviation analytics company OAG has released its On Time Performance (OTP) rankings for July, and two Canadian airlines took the top spots in the North American region. 

WestJet came in first, outperforming every other North American carrier with an 83.9 percent OTP and Flair Airlines following at 80.2 percent.

At the bottom was American carrier JetBlue, with an OTP of 59.2 percent, and a cancellation rate of 8.3 percent which the report states, (in what some might call an understatement,) “which in the peak month for travel in the USA will have frustrated many travellers.”

Air Transat rated an honourable mention for its inclusion in the “zero cancellations” club, which globally only included five others: Sky Express, Jet2.com, Vietnam Airlines, Middle East Airlines and Philippines AirAsia.

While WestJet and Flair took the top spots in on time performance for North America, they both failed to crack the top 10 globally, which was dominated by Asian carriers. The top spot went to Garuda Indonesia, which operated with an OTP of 95.4 percent of all flights arriving on time and a cancellation rate of just 0.61 percent. 

OAG calculates OTP by measuring the percentage of flights that depart or arrive within 15 minutes of their scheduled time. The higher the percentage, the better the OTP score. Cancellations are included in the data and are considered “not on-time.”
