Disney Cruise Line is expanding its fleet with the purchase of the partially built megaship Global Dream, which came available following the collapse of Genting Hong Kong and its MV Werften shipyard.

The Global Dream was being built for the now defunct Dream Cruises. The 208,000 gross ton ship is said to be about 75% complete. Originally, it was planned to sail year-round in Asia and target the family cruise market.

Disney says the ship will be renamed and based outside of the U.S., sailing to new destinations for the line. It is expected to debut in 2025. It is expected to be the first cruise ship to run on green methanol, an emerging fuel source with lower emission levels than liquefied natural gas.

Construction is to be completed at the former MV Werften shipyard in Wismar, Germany, under the management of Meyer Werft, the company that built three previous Disney vessels. DCL has two other new ships scheduled to arrive in 2024 and 2025.

"Our cruise ships give us the unique opportunity to bring Disney magic to fans no matter where they are, and the addition of this ship will make a Disney Cruise Line vacation accessible to more families than ever before," said Josh D'Amaro, chairman, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products.
