After years of verbal warfare, the city of Cancun taxi and Uber drivers are joining forces.
The two sides have signed an inclusion agreement. Taxi drivers will now be included on the Uber app so that both sides are represented in the same app.
The agreement goes into effect on January 1, 2024.
Like any big city, but especially a tourist town like Cancun, there have been disagreements. Some might even call it animosity. But now the taxis and the drivers for the rideshare program seem to be on the same page.
“Today what we are celebrating is a new stage of Uber in the state. Six years ago this would have been unthinkable, but what we are achieving today is making way for modernity, technology and many benefits for the people in the state, both for tourists and for the people who live here,” General Secretary Heriberto Nunez said.
The agreement means even more opportunities for citizens and tourists alike. The choices between Uber drivers and their cars and local taxis will be represented on the app.
The agreement reached in Cancun is similar to those in other major cities including New York, Paris, London, Rome and Punta Cana.
It is expected that more than 2,000 taxi drivers will become part of the Uber app.
The dispute has been going on practically since Uber returned to Cancun.
