WestJet has announced its winter schedule, with the headline news that 17 sun routes are returning to its network after being suspended for more than two years.
"The restart of these routes is another positive step in the restoration of our network as we solidify WestJet as the reliable, friendly and affordable airline we are known to be," said John Weatherill, EVP and Chief Commercial Officer.
"We recognize the past three winters have been disruptive to our guests' travel plans and we look forward to reconnecting Canadians to some of the warmer destinations they have missed the most."
Highlights from WestJet's winter schedule include:
Sun and Leisure, Transborder and Transatlantic:
-- Restart of 17 sun and leisure routes suspended since 2019
-- 45% increase to sun and leisure flights from winter 2021
-- 60% increase in transborder flights from winter 2021
-- 25% increase in transatlantic flights from winter 2021
In sun, transborder and other leisure routes, WestJet will increase flights from Central/Eastern Canada 50%, and from Western Canada 55% compared to winter 2021.
Network-wide, WestJet's winter schedule reflects a shift as it consolidates its strength in Western Canada. Winnipeg will see a 65% increase in flights from winter 2021, while Edmonton flights will increase 50%, Vancouver flights 35% and Calgary flights 30%. There will be just 10% more flights from Toronto compared to winter 2021.
Domestic Market
Here at home, WestJet is adding a new six-times weekly regional connection between Vancouver and Penticton, B.C., on WestJet Link on February 17, 2023. As well, the carrier is restarting the Edmonton-Nanaimo route that has been suspended since 2019.
