An Ontario man received the wrong advice from Air Canada over a typo on his ticket and ended up paying for it in a big way.

Brandon Bowen of Milton noticed the ticket he had booked to Thailand was missing a space between his middle name and last name on the booking. When he initially called Air Canada to fix it, he was told the error wouldn’t cause any problems during his travels.

To be sure, he called the airline back two days before his flight to confirm the missing space in his name wouldn’t cause trouble. This time, he was given different information. In fact it was a major error, particularly for international travel and needed to be rectified. Unfortunately, re-booking the ticket at the last minute came with a $6000 price increase, jacking the price to  $11,200.

It was a dream trip that was a long time in the planning, so Bowen decided to pay. On his return from Thailand, he began advocating for a refund, citing the fact he had received the wrong information the first time he called.

Air Canada ultimately agreed, telling CTV News, “We reviewed this case and we concluded that the customer should have been advised more clearly about his options during the initial call, which would have remedied this situation.”

Bowen was refunded the fare difference he paid, $6,213.

Depending on airline policy, typos and errors can often be corrected without a fee within 24 hours of booking. “In particular, people should check the itinerary, travel dates and name spellings,” an Air Canada spokesperson said.

This incident is a good reminder to enter details carefully and to double check as soon as you receive confirmation to have any mistakes fixed promptly.
