A 2024 “open skies” agreement between Australia and Canada is set to come into effect this summer.

Under the bilateral air service agreement (ASA), Canadian and Australian airlines will be granted unlimited access on routes to the other destination.  According to a report from Australian Aviation, Qantas is seeking “unrestricted passenger capacity on the Canada route for a period of 99 years” for itself, its subsidiaries including Jetstar, and codeshare flights with partners American Airlines and WestJet.

Before the agreement came into effect, Canadian airlines could operate 9,000 seats per week into Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, plus unlimited flights into other airports. Once the deal was signed in 2024, that increased to 50 weekly flights to Canada.

Presently, Qantas operates an up to daily flight from Sydney to Vancouver on a Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft configured with 236 seats.

Australia is also accessible from Toronto and Vancouver on Air Canada.
