Porter Airlines will close its crew bases in Thunder Bay, Ont., and Halifax, N.S., effective May 7, a move that will affect dozens of flight attendants and other crew members.

The airline confirmed the closures in a statement, describing the decision as part of a “transformative growth plan” that reflects how Porter’s network has evolved in recent years, CBC News reported.

Dozens of Crew Members Impacted

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 4061, which represents Porter flight attendants, said the closures will affect approximately 26 cabin crew members in Thunder Bay, with a similar number impacted in Halifax.

Affected crew members will be required to relocate to Porter’s remaining bases in Toronto or Ottawa, commute at their own expense, opt for early retirement, or take extended voluntary layoffs.

The union has called on the airline to revisit its commuting policies, citing the financial and personal strain placed on employees.

Porter confirmed that its Thunder Bay maintenance facility will remain open, with staff continuing to work at that location despite the crew base closure, CBC News said.

According to reports, union representatives said discussions with the airline are ongoing as employees consider their options ahead of the May deadline.
