Currently operating a fleet of 12 aircraft, Edmonton-based Flair Airlines has big expansion dreams. The ultra-low-cost carrier says it will add 20 new planes by summer 2023.

The company aims to have a fleet of 50 aircraft by 2025.

Flair says it will lease 14 new Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, which carry 189 passengers and run cleaner and more efficiently than its 737 predecessors.

"We're on a mission to deliver low fares to Canadians and flying a state-of-the-art Boeing 737 MAX fleet means we can do this at the lowest passenger-mile cost in Canada, and with the lowest carbon emissions of any Canadian carrier," said Stephen Jones, CEO of Flair Airlines.

"With our substantial fleet expansion, Canadian travellers can continue to benefit from Flair's eye-popping fares and increased service from existing and new airports in our network across Canada, the United States and Mexico."

The airline currently flies to 32 destinations within Canada and the U.S., with service beginning to Mexico scheduled to begin in February.

During a conference call about the expansion, Jones was asked about a Canadian Transportation Agency review of Flair's leasing contracts to ensure the airline meets Canadian ownership and control rules.

"The review of the CTA is part the aviation environment," said Jones. "Customers shouldn't be worried. We are a Canadian airline."
