Joining the growing ranks of airlines charging for carry-on luggage, Air Transat announced changes to its baggage fee structure, set to begin tomorrow, Feb. 11, 2025.
Passengers in the lowest tier ticket category, “Eco Basic” will now be allowed only a small personal item (such as a purse or small backpack). All other luggage must be checked and paid for. The change applies to travellers heading to all South destinations (except Peru), the U.S. and domestically within Canada.
The second ticket tier, “Eco Standard” will also face fee changes for those travelling to the same destinations, now charging for all checked luggage. As reported by the CBC, the fees will vary depending on the destination and number of checked bags. The first bag subjected to the fees will cost between $35 and $50, plus taxes, if applicable — and a second bag will cost between $55 and $83 before any taxes.
Flights to Europe and Morocco will not be affected by these changes.
The airline has stated that the change will allow passengers to pay for only the things they require and brings the company in line with other airlines.
“These adjustments allow us to offer even more competitive fares and better align with industry practices, ensuring we continue to provide an accessible travel experience tailored to market expectations,” said Bernard Côté, senior director, brand communications at Transat.
