Air Canada is preparing for a new era of international expansion with the arrival of its first Airbus A321XLR aircraft in 2026.

The long-range narrowbody jet will enable the airline to open profitable routes to markets previously unreachable with its existing fleet, beginning with Palma de Mallorca in June 2026.

Alexandre Lefevre, Vice President of Network Planning for North America and Scheduling at Air Canada, emphasized the significance of the aircraft.

"We are going to finally get our hands on that new aircraft,” said Lefevre. “And it's going to open up a range of new possibilities, new routes, new markets for Air Canada. We're really excited and it's a big deal for us that will herald a new era of international growth for Air Canada.”

Air Canada expects the aircraft to enter commercial service by summer 2026, following initial testing and certification in the early months of the year.

The A321XLR will also serve routes such as Toulouse, Dublin and Edinburgh from Montréal starting next summer.

The aircraft's extended range, powered by larger fuel tanks, opens possibilities that were previously economically unviable.

Lefevre noted that "when you've got a tool like the A321XLR that's completely different from the tools you've got in your toolbox today, that opens up new markets that today you cannot viably and profitably open."

Beyond international expansion, the A321XLR offers versatility for domestic routes.

Its lie-flat business seats will be available on transcontinental flights within Canada, providing business-class comfort on narrowbody aircraft.

“The A321XLR is not a single trick aircraft. It's a very versatile machine that can go international, but it can also operate a domestic transcontinental route,” Lefevre said.

The aircraft features an all-new cabin interior with larger overhead XL bins and improved boarding efficiency, translating to faster turnarounds and better on-time performance. Air Canada plans to use the A321XLR as the launch platform for cabin innovations that will eventually roll out across its entire fleet, modernizing the customer experience fleetwide.
