Key Updates Underway at Grand Memories Cayo Largo

The partnership between Sunwing Vacations and Blue Diamond Resorts has fuelled some major changes on Cayo Largo, where all 11 properties on the Cuban island are all seeing major updates that have included both infrastructure and operations.

The Grand Memories Cayo Largo is one of them and though currently closed for a complete overhaul, TravelPulse Canada did a private tour of the 306 room property. Scheduled to reopen in November 2023, the property is undergoing everything from water and AC updates to interior redesign.

For reference, agents may remember Grand Memories Cayo Largo as the Playa Blanca. Sanctuary at Grand Memories is the adults-only side and has been updated and is currently open for travellers.

When we toured, the main lobby renovation was nearly complete and work on the main pool was underway. It's the island's 2nd biggest resort (the largest is Starfish Cayo Largo) and includes a kids club, fitness center and outdoor theatre. There are multiple restaurants to grab snacks or have a meal, and the indoor buffet is also air conditioned.

"Grand Memories is meant for families, and there is lots to do on site for everyone," explained Carlos de la Cruz, Memories' Manager Carlos de la Cruz. "When the main pool renovation is finished it will provide a nice backdrop to arrivals as you can see it, and then beyond, the ocean, from our main reception."

The rooms however are perhaps the most impressive transformation.

Bright and airy, the rooms have been upgraded with air conditioner units, a fridge and a fresh bathroom design. Standard rooms are large and for larger families, there are master suites which feature a separate living room with couch that also folds into a bed.

There are also two-storey suites; the entire first floor is living space with a fold out couch (pictured), and a bathroom, and upstairs is a bedroom with bathroom.

"It's a lot of work to get ready, but we're excited to welcome travellers in November," says de la Cruz.
