Uruguay Travel Guide

Scenic beaches, interesting wildlife, rolling vineyards, and quaint towns make Uruguay an up-and-coming destination in South America.

Known as one of the safest places in South America, it is a dreamy destination that has quirk and character, and a rich culture to share.

The most common way to get around Uruguay, from city to city, is to use coach travel. The bus system is well-connected throughout the country, so you can get to wherever you need to be. We found the journeys to be quite enjoyable as you can see views of the countryside.

The inter-city bus systems are also the most popular form of public transport to get around each place.

Another good alternative is hiring a car to travel around the country. If you have a valid driver’s license in your home country, you may be able to use it or convert it for use in Uruguay, depending on the country you’re from.

Uruguay is fantastic to visit at any time of the year, due to its consistently comfortable temperatures. Summer is the most popular time to visit, as travelers enjoy the warmth.

However, if you want to avoid crowds during the peak season, we recommend visiting during spring or autumn as the weather will still be pleasant.

  • Montevideo: Uruguay’s capital is a must-visit as it is the center of all cultural activity. The historic attractions and colonial-style buildings can keep you busy for days. Our favorite sights include the Puerto Market, Montevideo Metropolitan, and Solis Theatre.
  • La Paloma: A laid-back seaside town along the coast, La Paloma is a great escape from the city buzz. You can spend your days here surfing, enjoying the nightlife, and savoring the local delicacies. Or, you can just spend some time relaxing on the beautiful beach. If you visit during the winter months, you can partake in the remarkable whale-watching in the area.
  • Colonia del Sacramento: For a truly unique setting, Colonia del Sacramento is an idyllic setting for those who want to enjoy the quiet, small-town experience. The town is known for its old, historic buildings in bright colors lined along quaint cobblestone streets. We recommend seeing the lighthouse, the Portuguese Museum, the Marina, and Plaza de Armas.
  • Carmelo: If you want to spend some time soaking in a bit of nature, then Carmelo is a picturesque town that sits along the Rio de la Plata river. Carmelo is home to phenomenal beaches, but the big drawcard that sets it apart is its proximity to many of the country’s major wineries. You can stroll through the vineyards, enjoy the views, and taste the produce.
