Amid growing concern about crossing the border into the U.S., Egale Canada, a 2SLGBTQI advocacy group has decided against attending events in the United States “for the foreseeable future.”

The organization, with the stated aim to “ improve and save lives through research, education, awareness, and by advocating for human rights and equality in Canada and around the world” was slated to attend the upcoming Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations Headquarters in New York next month. Last week they issued a statement indicating they would not be sending representatives, nor will they be attending other events in the U.S., including the massive WorldPride gathering in Washington D.C. in May. The biennial event was last held in New York in 2023 and drew more than 5 million attendees.

Concerns about the safety of border crossing for trans and non-binary staff with an “X” gender on their passports, a designation that has been discontinued in the U.S., prompted the move. “This decision is foremost based on the need to safeguard our trans and non-binary staff who would face questionable treatment at land and aviation borders to attend such convenings, and to stand in solidarity with global colleagues who are experiencing similar fear around entry to the U.S., “ Egale Canada said in its statement. “It is also founded in the unique situation that has been thrust on Canadians (and citizens of other countries) regarding economic warfare and threats to our national sovereignty.”

Canadian travellers have indicated some hesitation about travelling south of the border. You can read more here:
