An advisory from Global Affairs instructing Canadians to leave the Middle East was issued “in error” according to a statement released on Saturday. In the correction, Global Affairs tells Canadians to check the travel advisory for each country in the region and act accordingly, a step back from the blanket advisory that was originally issued.

According to the Globe and Mail, the first, erroneous, advisory instructed Canadians in the Middle East to “ensure that their travel documents are valid and to leave via commercial options if safe.”

Global Affairs did not offer an explanation for the correction or a statement about why the first advisory was issued.

Presently in the Middle East, Israel, the West Bank and Gaza are under a red, “Avoid all travel” advisory, as are Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Yemen and Syria.

Jordan and Lebanon are under an orange, “Avoid non-essential travel” advisory, with elevated advisories to avoid travel to specific regions in each country.

Canadians travelling internationally are encouraged to register as a Canadian Abroad in order to receive communication and updated advice from the government.
