Anticipated crowds and traffic for the Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina this winter have prompted the Canadian government to update its travel advisory for Italy.

The update did not affect the travel risk level, which remains at yellow/exercise a high degree of caution due to potential terrorism threats.

The Olympic Winter Games, which will be held from Feb. 6 to 22, 2026, followed by the Paralympic Winter Games from March 6 to 15, 2026, are being hosted at several venues throughout the northern part of Italy.

The updates from Global Affairs centre on wintery weather on congested roads and public transit and on the risk of pickpocketing and petty crime.

The advisory states that Canadians travelling to Italy for the games should plan their journey carefully, and leave plenty of time to travel between locations.

Additionally, the update warns about thieves and pickpockets who operate in large crowds, such as the Olympics attract, and not to buy event tickets on the street from touts. “You should only purchase event tickets through the official Milan Cortina 2026 website or reputable resale services,” it states.

Travellers are advised to expect:

  • An increased presence of security forces.
  • Major disruptions to traffic and movement.
  • Large crowds and public gatherings.
