Advisory Issued for Spain and Portugal

Raging wildfires in Spain and Portugal have prompted the Canadian government to issue a travel advisory. 

The warning did not affect the risk level, which for Spain remained at yellow/exercise a high degree of caution and green/exercise normal precautions for Portugal.

The warning on each country’s travel advice page states: 

“Evacuation orders and warnings are in effect for multiple regions.

Road closures and poor visibility due to smoke are affecting travel. Air quality is significantly degraded in fire-affected zones.”

The wildfires, which started last month in Portugal and have spread during August in Spain, have been exacerbated by the dry, hot conditions in the Iberian peninsula this summer. The feds warn that the smoke and fire can cause disruptions in communications and transportation networks.

The Spanish regions currently under threat are:

• Ourense
• Zamora
• Salamanca
• León
• Cáceres
  
  

In Portugal, the affected districts are:

• Viseu
• Guarda
• Coimbra
• Castelo Branco

 

The government advises travellers to stay away from the affected area, particularly if you suffer from respiratory ailments; follow the instructions of local authorities, including any evacuation orders and to monitor local media for the latest information.
