Miami Beach may be famous for its sunshine, nightlife and iconic coastline — but if you’re hoping to ring in the New Year there, be ready to pay a serious premium.

According to a new survey from Cheaphotels.org, Miami Beach has been named the most expensive place in the world to stay on New Year’s Eve this year, edging out every other major global city when it comes to hotel pricing over the holiday.

The study took a close look at hotel rates in 60 big-name destinations worldwide. Researchers tracked the cheapest available double room for a three-night stay from December 30 through January 2, focusing only on centrally located hotels with at least a three-star rating.

Miami Beach topped the list with a price tag of $1,187 for the most affordable qualifying room over that three-night period. What makes that number especially jaw-dropping is how far it sits above normal pricing: it represents a 197 percent jump compared with typical hotel rates in January.

Not far behind Miami Beach are two other famously festive cities. Rio de Janeiro ranked second, with the cheapest three-night stay coming in at $1,172, while New York City took third place at $1,164.

Across the Atlantic, Europe is also seeing eye-popping holiday prices. Edinburgh landed in fourth place overall, with hotel rates reaching $1,040 for the three-night stretch. Vienna wasn’t far behind, coming in sixth at $994.

The survey also revealed just how much hotel costs have risen in some destinations compared with recent years. Bangkok experienced the biggest jump, with prices soaring 94 percent compared to the last edition of the study in 2022. Copenhagen followed with a 72 percent increase, while Vienna’s New Year’s Eve rates climbed 63 percent over the same period.

But it’s not all bad news for budget-conscious travelers. On the opposite end of the spectrum sits Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital, which was named the most affordable city in the survey. Hotel prices there have dropped by more than 60 percent since 2022, and travelers can find rooms for as little as $20 per night during the New Year period — a stark contrast to the four-figure price tags seen in Miami or New York.

Other popular destinations also made the top 10 priciest list, including Sydney, Cancun, Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Paris, showing that demand for holiday travel remains strong across multiple continents.

The list below highlights the 10 most expensive places in the world to book a hotel for New Year’s Eve, based on the lowest-priced double rooms available for stays between December 30 and January 2, along with how much those rates spike compared to typical January pricing.

  1. Miami Beach $1,187 (+197%)
  2. Rio de Janeiro $1,172 (+284%)
  3. New York City $1,164 (+218%)
  4. Edinburgh $1,040 (+316%)
  5. Sydney $1,035  (+248%)
  6. Vienna $994 (+257%)
  7. Cancun $987 (+116%)
  8. Amsterdam $924 (+165%)

  10. Paris $796 (+74%)
