Mexico is leading the way for North America travel and tourism heading into what could be a monumental summer for the continent.

According to the 2026 Economic Impact Research (EIR) from the World Travel & Tourism Council, Mexico's travel and tourism GDP grew 1.8 percent in 2025, edging out the U.S. at 0.9 percent and Canada at 1.2 percent.

The data, sponsored by Lead Research Partner Chase Travel, also shows impressive growth in international visitor arrivals and spending growth in 2025.

International visitor arrivals to Mexico in 2025 increased 6.1 percent, compared with declines of 5.5 percent in the U.S. and 0.6 percent in Canada. Meanwhile, international visitor spending in Mexico jumped 3.5 percent in 2025. Across the border, the U.S. recorded a decline of 4.6 percent, while Canada saw a decline of 3.5 percent.

The U.S. remains the world’s largest travel and tourism economy despite the recent slump.

According to WTTC, North America "continues to benefit from strong domestic demand and lower exposure to geopolitical disruption linked to ongoing conflict in the Middle East."

This summer's FIFA World Cup—taking place in the U.S., Canada and Mexico—poses another advantage. The soccer tournament is expected to provide a major boost to travel and tourism growth across North America in 2026, with WTTC forecasting travel and tourism GDP growth of 6.4 percent in Canada, 2.4 percent in Mexico, and 2.1 percent in the U.S. this year.

"North America’s Travel & Tourism sector continues to demonstrate resilience and strong long-term potential, supported by robust domestic demand and sustained investment across the region. Mexico’s performance in 2025 clearly shows the strength of its tourism sector and its growing competitiveness on the global stage," WTTC President and CEO Gloria Guevara said in a statement.

"The FIFA World Cup presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity for North America to accelerate tourism growth, strengthen connectivity, and showcase the region to millions of travelers worldwide. This international event is a chance to capitalize on the long-term benefits it provides," she added.
