Japan is emerging as one of the top destinations for Canadians in 2026, according to new data from Skyscanner.

Airfare puts Japan within reach.

Skyscanner data shows the average round-trip flight price to Tokyo in 2026 is $1,183, ranking it among the top 10 cheapest destinations globally that year.

As travellers remain cost-conscious, the data suggests Japan is no longer viewed as a prohibitively expensive long-haul destination.

Culture and food remain central draws.

Travellers are drawn to everyday experiences such as neighbourhood ramen shops and izakayas, alongside historic temples, contemporary architecture and design-forward districts.

In cities like Tokyo, distinct neighbourhoods offer different food cultures and rhythms, encouraging exploration beyond major landmarks.

Every day experiences shape travel choices.

Skyscanner reports a growing interest in what it describes as “shelf discovery” travel.

Its data shows 58% of Canadian travellers always or often visit local supermarkets while abroad. Japan’s convenience stores, distinctive food packaging and ubiquitous vending machines have become part of the travel experience, reflecting a shift toward hyper-local, everyday moments rather than traditional sightseeing alone.

Seasonal travel boosts demand.

Japan’s cherry blossom season remains a major driver of travel interest.

The annual tradition of hanami continues to attract visitors for both its visual appeal and cultural significance, with parks and urban spaces becoming gathering points for seasonal celebrations and festivals.

Iconic experiences at a better value.

Skyscanner also points to recent comparisons circulating on social media showing that a trip to Tokyo, including visits to Tokyo Disney, can cost less than a vacation to Disney World in Florida.

Combined with access to museums, historic sites and theme parks, Japan is increasingly viewed as offering strong value for well-known experiences.
