After a vacation in Loreto, La Paz or Cabo, a few more pesos isn’t going to hurt, but travellers should be aware of the new tax rate to visit Baja California Sur (BCS).

At the start of the month, the BCS tourist “Embrace It” tax was quietly raised from MX$470 to MX$488. In Canadian dollars under the present exchange rate, that’s an increase from roughly $37 to $38.50.

The Embrace It tax is paid by visitors upon arrival by sea, land or air to the sunny state on the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula. It’s applied to everyone over the age of 12 who is visiting for longer than 24 hours.

The tax was introduced last year under conflicting information that has since been ironed out. Payment of the tax is made online and proof of payment must be presented at any port of entry.

The Embrace It tax is one of an increasing number of tourist taxes aimed at collecting funds for sometimes underfunded local government initiatives. The Embrace It website states that the money collected is used to “strengthen what makes this destination unique” by funding better infrastructure, security, environmental protection and helping create more prosperous communities.
