Canadian North teamed up with WestJet to provide additional flights over the past weekend, with about 10% of WestJet’s fleet grounded due to hail damage.
On August 5, an intense summer storm pounded YYC with large hail, resulting in significant damage to 16 WestJet planes and flooding to parts of the airport’s domestic terminal.
As of Friday, WestJet said it continued to “perform necessary repairs and inspections” on the aircraft damaged in the storm. There were 22 WestJet planes on the tarmac when the storm sprung up with little advance warning. The airline was able to get four of those into hangars.
As WestJet teams worked on inspections and repairs, the airline operated several extra sections between Friday, August 9 and Monday, August 12, to accommodate disrupted guests and support the airline's scheduled service, including:
· 37 additional sections operated by WestJet Encore.
· 14 additional sections operated by Canadian North.
· 1 additional section operated on WestJet's Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.
After cancelling nearly 350 flights between Monday and Friday, WestJet has since cancelled another 250 flights through tomorrow.
