WestJet flight 2276 made a hard landing at Princess Juliana International Airport(SXM) in St. Maarten Sunday afternoon.The airline confirmed the aircraft, operating from Toronto, touched down at 17:29 UTC and emergency crews were immediately called to the scene. Foam was deployed around the aircraft as a precaution, and passengers exited using emergency slides.
According to reports, there were 164 people on board the B737-800, three passengers were transported for medical assessment.
“All guests and crew safely evacuated and were transported to the terminal. All guests are accounted for and there are no reported injuries,” WestJet said in a statement.“Our teams are focused on supporting our guests and crew, ensuring their safety and care remain our highest priority,” the statement said.
Princess Juliana International Airport is well known in aviation circles for its challenging approach. Aircraft descend at a low altitude over Maho Beach before reaching the runway, a procedure that demands precision from flight crews. The airport is considered one of the most difficult commercial runways in the world.WestJet said it is cooperating with local authorities as the investigation continues.
