The WestJet Group announced it has officially completed its integration of Sunwing Airlines, concluding a two-year process that brings another major Canadian carrier under the WestJet umbrella.
This marks the second airline consolidation for WestJet in as many years, following the integration of ultra-low-cost carrier Swoop in 2024.
“Completing two airline consolidations in just two years—the first with Swoop in 2024 and now Sunwing—was complex and required coordination across every aspect of our business, from operational, labour, and regulatory areas to experiential and cultural elements,” said Alexis von Hoensbroech, Chief Executive Officer of the WestJet Group.
“Achieving this milestone is proof of the incredible way our unified team works together and is a clear win for WestJet and our guests; it's also a story of transformation in Canadian aviation. A huge thanks to everyone who contributed!”
WestJet acquired Sunwing in May 2023, aiming to unify two Canadian leisure travel brands. The integration officially wrapped up on May 29, 2025.
A key component of the integration involved unifying the fleet under a single Air Operator Certificate (AOC).
This includes 16 former Swoop aircraft, nine from the now-defunct Lynx Air, and 18 from Sunwing Airlines—bringing WestJet’s total narrowbody fleet to 150 Boeing 737s.
As aircraft are reconfigured to meet WestJet’s standard interiors through 2025, the airline says passengers can expect a consistent onboard experience.
Seating options will include Premium, Economy, Extended Comfort, and UltraBasic across all 737 aircraft, reflecting WestJet’s focus on offering product flexibility at varying price points.
The integration also aims to streamline the travel experience for passengers booking through the Sunwing Vacations brand, which continues to operate as a Canadian tour operator.
WestJet said improvements are underway to simplify booking processes and overall guest experience.
“The final Sunwing-operated flight this week is a time to reflect,” von Hoensbroech added.
“I know every Sunwing employee, past and present, feels their contributions have mattered to advancing the experience of air travel. To all WestJetters and former Sunwing team members: thank you. This milestone is your achievement, and a proud moment for us all.”
