Travellers faced with a long layover at Chek Lap Kok Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) now have a great new way to spend their time. The airport authority has partnered with Trip.com to provide tours of the city, including airport transfers, an English-speaking guide and an express pass to speed through security for the connecting flight. It's similar to programs already running in Shanghai and Beijing.

"We are delighted to introduce the new free local tour service for transfer passengers at HKIA to turn transit time into cultural exploration opportunities,” says Vivian Cheung, Chief Executive Officer of Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK). “With the support from Trip.com, we look forward to presenting Hong Kong's unique beauty to travellers from around the world and promoting tourism, through which we aim to attract more passengers to transfer at Hong Kong and strengthen HKIA's position as a premier international aviation hub."

There are three free tours (as well as three paid “premium” options) to choose from, each four hours long. Travellers can register in advance on the Trip.com website or walk up at the airport. There is room for 20 participants on each tour on a first come, first serve basis.

Participants must have a layover of at least seven hours and have the correct visas or documentation to visit Hong Kong.

Please note that presently only the afternoon Citywalk and Waterfront Journey tours are listed on the Hong Kong Airport website, with a note that additional tours will be added soon.
