After a month marked with rough weather and a crash that caused havoc at Canada’s busiest airport, Canadian airlines have had their fair share of trouble.

The domino effect caused by the disruptions was keenly felt by Sunwing Airlines, which had to cancel and reschedule flights while dealing with repatriating travellers who were stuck in their destination and trying to juggle staffing.

In a new statement, the airline pointed to a “confluence of unfortunate circumstances” that hampered ability to reposition aircraft and crew to other airports to help alleviate the backlog in flights. Additionally, Toronto Pearson’s temporary airport and runway closures, crew restraints and extremely limited hotel capacity brought on additional operational complexities.

As of Feb. 27, Sunwing announced it has now resumed normal service and any new interruptions are due to new, unrelated causes.

Now that all the passengers who were stuck are home, Sunwing begins the process of assessing and paying out claims. Due to high volumes, the airline is advising it is not able to guarantee eligibility confirmations within the standard 48 hours. Passengers who believe they have a claim should submit it to www.sunwing.ca/en/sunwing-airlines/delay-claim for assessment. Receipts for related expenses can be sent to Sunwing Cares at www.sunwing.ca/en/sunwing-cares for review.
