Travellers passing through security at Halifax Stanfield International (YHZ) this summer will be subject to new screening regulations aimed at making the process safer and more efficient.

A new CT x-ray machine is being installed at one of the security lines, the first step in bringing the technology to all the lines.

The machine enables security officers to see three-dimensional rotatable images, enhancing their ability to detect explosives and other threat items.

For passengers, it means a break from having to pull their liquids (still required to be under 100 mls) or laptops and large electronic devices out of their carry-on bags.

“As we enter the peak summer season, we are pleased to work closely with our partners at CATSA to introduce an expanded security screening facility, including an additional line that will host one of CATSA’s new CT X-ray systems,” says Dean Bouchard, vice president of airport planning and development at the Halifax International Airport Authority. “The implementation of this new technology will help streamline the security process and enhance the passenger experience.”

According to CATSA, the CT x-ray is already in place at select checkpoints at a handful of Canadian airports as part of a multi-year role out, including at:

  • Vancouver International Airport (YVR)
  • Ottawa International Airport (YOW)
  • Montréal-Trudeau International Airport (YUL)
  • Calgary International Airport (YYC)
  • Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ)
  • Québec City Jean Lesage International Airport  (YQB)
