Amidst a crowded domestic market, Canada Jetlines has put the brakes on its Toronto-Vancouver and Toronto-Calgary routes, suspending them for now in favour of the guaranteed revenue from wet leases.
The carrier says that with three new 174-seat A320s scheduled to arrive by year-end, it plans to resume domestic routes in the fall.
After launching in September 2022, Canada Jetlines began flying the twice-weekly YYZ-YYC and YYZ-YVR routes. It later added twice-weekly return flights from Toronto Pearson to Las Vegas and Cancun. Those routes will continue.
"When we had an opportunity to operate an ACMI lease, that's guaranteed revenue and guaranteed hours. From a business perspective, it makes sense for us to take the ACMI lease," chief financial officer Duncan Bureau told the Toronto Star. "This is very common across airlines around the world."
Bureau told the newspaper that it remains "extremely bullish" on the Toronto to Calgary and Vancouver routes, calling them "key gateways."
Canada Jetlines says it is continuing with plans to launch a tour operator named Jetline Vacations this summer, throwing its hat into the competitive winter sun market.
