Air Canada to Recall 2,600 Workers

Air Canada will recall more than 2,600 workers as it gets ready for an increase in demand for flights.

CTV News and Canadian Press report the employees being recalled will include various roles, including flight attendants, and will be brought back in stages this month and next.

Air Canada spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick told Canadian Press that the airline moved to recall the workers because it's seeing an increase in vaccinations in Canada, a decrease in COVID-19 infections and an easing of government travel restrctions.

Fitzpatrick said the recall is part of Air Canada's effort to rebuild its network, which is being expanded all around the world, and to meet the expected demand for travel. TravelPulse Canada was the first to report on Air Canada's route expansion a week ago.

Air Canada laid off tens of thousands of workers as COVID-19 swept across Canada, including 16,500 last March.

The federal government in April reached a deal to give the airline a $5.9 billion loan package.
