Cayman Islands Travel Guide

The Cayman Islands is a popular tourist destination for both seasoned and amateur travelers. It offers visitors the chance to experience a tropical atmosphere with breathtaking views while also lounging in the lap of luxury.

To experience the Cayman Islands fully, use this travel guide to navigate the national languages, local currencies, travel weather, and more during your visit.

There are a variety of ways to get around the three Cayman Islands.

  • By Plane: There are airports on all three Cayman Islands and regular flights. This is the fastest way to travel from one island to the next but it can be expensive if you need to do it often.
  • By Taxi: Taxis are the best and easiest mode of transportation if you plan on staying on one island. But we found it hard to find taxis that went beyond the major tourist destinations.
  • By Boat: Traveling by boat is definitely the most fun way to get around. But because most of the charters are private, it can be expensive. We found it best to find a local boat option with fewer luxury amenities.
  • By Rental Car: This was the best way for us to travel on an island. There are many rental agencies available at fair prices and it gives the flexibility to travel around at your own pace.
  • By Bus: The most affordable travel option is to take the Cayman bus. There are normal commuter buses so they don’t prioritize travel spots. But they work great if you’re not against walking from a bus spot to your destination.

National Languages

The Cayman Islands' official language is English and more than 90% of the population speaks it. It makes getting around the islands very easy.

You may hear people talking about Cayman Creole. This is still English but with the signature Cayman dialect and accent.

Climate And Weather

The Cayman Islands are part of the Caribbean Sea, which is hot, humid, and tropical the whole year. There isn’t much variation between the summer and winter months.

Like other tropical destinations, the weather is distinguished through the wet and dry seasons.

The wet season, which is from May to November, is hot and cloudy. October is the month with the most rain.

The rest of the year is pretty dry but still warm, and April is the driest month of the year.

No matter the season, the Cayman Islands weather is perfect for frolicking on the beach and sunbathing. The rainy season showers only last a few hours and they don’t experience severe hurricane weather. It’s an all-year-round travel destination.

That being said, if you’re like us, you might want to avoid the crowds or the heat. If you want to skip the oppressive heat, January to early March is the time to go. And if you want to avoid crowds, then visit during the off-peak season from the beginning of April to June.

  • Start your stay with a visit to George Town. The vibrant Cayman Islands capital city is full of good food and even better views.
  • For us, West Bay is the best place to relax. The region sees fewer tourists and is our go-to spot to experience the Cayman Islands as the locals do.
  • The opposite of West Bay is Rum Point. Filled with lively bars and tourist hot spots, we think this is the best place to let your hair down and enjoy a few nights out on the town.
