The Dominican Republic saw more than 5.2 million visitors in 2025 and expects to see that number increase by more than 8 percent in 2026. So, what do you need to know about planning that fantastic DR beach vacation? We’ve got you covered.

The Dominican Republic is located in the Caribbean and shares the island of Hispaniola with neighboring country Haiti. Toward its north is the Atlantic Ocean and toward its south, you’ll find the colorful Caribbean Sea. The country’s climate is a humid tropical one, with year-round warm temperatures. There is a rainy season, which extends from May to November, and a dry season the remainder of the year. But sunny skies prevail more often than not!

The country is easy to get to and it is served by four main airports: Aeropuerto Internacional de Las Américas (SDQ) in Santo Domingo, Aeropuerto Internacional de Punta Cana (PUJ), Aeropuerto Internacional del Cibao (STI) in Santiago, and Aeropuerto Internacional Gregorio Luperón (POP) in Puerto Plata. Visitors entering the Dominican Republic apply for a simple e-ticket before departing, allowing them to enter and depart the country smoothly.

Don’t forget about the most exciting part of planning your trip, deciding on what you want to focus on! Whether it’s simple relaxation, wellness, culture, cuisine, or adventure, the Dominican Republic has plenty for every type of traveler. Some highlights include the following.

Water sports are a big draw to the Dominican Republic, and travelers can enjoy snorkeling, diving, surfing, paddleboarding, or simply swimming and frolicking in the stunning waters. Outdoor sports enthusiasts come for the extensive array of golf courses, baseball, hiking, and mountain biking.

If adventure is your thing, you can keep your days filled with ziplines, adventure parks, aquariums, water parks, cenotes, visiting caves, and even off-roading. And you can then fill your evenings with fantastic Dominical cuisine, such as seafood, stews, fried plantains, or popular street food like chimichurri burgers or yaniqueques. Don’t forget about the nightlife here, whether it’s at the resort or in town, there are so many options.
